So, I’m gonna assume many of you know that there is a “campaign” on Facebook to change your display picture to a cartoon character from your childhood. (If any of you are wondering, I’m Belle :D. In her green dress)
The campaign is going on in support of the work done by the NSPCC to help prevent child abuse.
It’s really encouraging to see so many of my friends take part and it’s also cool to see who they’ve chosen to have as their display pictures. Some of them are obvious; my best friend, for example, is Ariel and I knew she would be.
However, I’m here for a whine. There are some people, and it saddens me to say some friends of mine, who haven’t done it because “Well, it’s not going to change anything is it - child abusers aren’t going to think “Ah, you’ve put a cartoon face on your facebook - I won’t abuse this child now” are they?”
My answer to this is, no probably not but I’m doing it because it’s something I can do to show my solidarity towards this cause! And it’s only really solidarity if everyone else does it.
And as another friend of mine has pointed out, maybe I just want to have a cartoon character on my facebook. As I said to someone, Belle’s face is much prettier than mine - I’m sure people prefer looking at her than me. :D
It’s reminiscent of the “Get Rage Against The Machine To Number One” thing. It was nicer to see the solidarity rather than to get the song to number one. People who didn’t even like Rage joined the group except this is a much more serious issue than trying to bash Simon Cowell and his minions down. This is trying to prevent something that harms a living person every day…
I get that people can’t always afford to give to charity, and I get that people don’t always have the time to help a charity (as in be out there raising money) but this is one tiny little thing that helps raise awareness and they can’t even do that. It saddens me more to think that people would rather stop X-Factor getting to No.1 than show that they support the NSPCC and all they do to prevent child abuse.
It seems, that when all is said and done, some people really would rather turn a blind eye….
